When Tanja Huberli and Nina Betschart (Brunner) took on Anouk Verge-Depre and Joana Heidrich in an all-Swiss encounter in the Tokyo Olympics Round of 16, it certainly demonstrated the high quality of the country's leading teams on the international circuit. Indeed, going into the Olympic tournament, Huberli and Betschart were among the favourites to win medals. They lost to their compatriots in Japan, but lived up to those opinions when they won the European Beach Volleyball Championships in Vienna just one week after the end of the Olympic tournament.
